As with the extraction and use of any fossil fuel , negative environmental effects arise as a result of the extraction, upgrading , and processing of bitumen from the oil sands. The 120-odd active oil sands projects are owned by major oil companies from Canada and around the world, including the U.S. and China. Together, the companies pump out 2.6 million barrels every day, virtually all of which is shipped to U.S. refineries. What’s shipped is diluted bitumen, not crude oil. The oil sands industry currently contributes a significant amount to Canada’s national air emissions portfolio. Oil sands production constitutes approximately 4% of national sulphur oxides (SO x ) emissions, 1% of national nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emissions, 2% of national volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions and 3% of Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
